Young Reflections

 /

Artist Statement

Young Reflections serves as an introspective exploration of girlhood, delving into the psychological spaces of uncertainty and self-discovery. Rooted in personal experience, this series offers a reflection on my own journey through youth, set against the backdrop of Petty Harbour, NL, rather my native Busan. The juxtaposition of these disparate locales-moving from the far east of Asia to the far east of North America-served as a catalyst for contemplation, prompting me to revisit the formative years of my upbringing while navigating the unfamiliar terrain of a new environment.

In essence, Young Reflections embodies a quest for meaning, a journey of rediscovery aimed at reaffirming my commitment to the practice of art and re-establishing my sense of identity. Through this deeply personal expression, I confront the underlying traumas of girlhood, grapple with the awareness of existence within a fragile reality, and embrace the enduring spirit of hope. Embracing ambiguity in my representational work, I extend an invitation to family members and neighbours to serve as models, seeking to capture the essence of young women through the celebration of seemingly mundane moments. In this reimagined reality, I strive to illuminate the resilience inherent in the everyday experiences of youth, inviting viewers to join me in a journey of reflection and discovery.
